ATX Sugar Rush: Sweet Tooth’s Amy Barber
Another VERY Austin designer who has crazy whimsical style! After all of my travels, I still find it so interesting how style varies by city - after visiting here my first time I would have thought the style was only tattooed, American Apparel, and vintage. After further investigating, and many an unnecessary purchase - I got to know the real Austin style: Playful, bright, and ironic. Who would have thought that gluing a birdie figure to a bobby pin would result in a business plan? Amy Barber’s handbag & accessory line, Sweet Tooth, is quintessential Austin. The mod prints are definitely one of her best elements beyond those adorable birdies - it’s like an estrogen packed, 70’s cross between psychedelic and pop art. Of course I love it, I die for color. Luckily, the designers here create with a very uncompromised aesthetic - there isn’t a lot of keeping up with the shows - or what is new, next, and now. Keep Austin weird - I love that hippie hippie chic.

Loveee the birdie pins! Totally my style! Also love the gloves…I feel like buying them and them going driving on the winding Austin roads.
i know, i just bought the driving gloves. sadly no camel available in medium. but black will match more anyway. jenny - ideas on what to wear the gloves with? i’m thinking three-quarter length sleeves would be best.
Emily you are such a diva I’m so happy you loved them enough to buy! Yes - here in Austin you can definitely get away with 3/4s - and the market is actually saturated with 3/4s jackets. A while ago the NY Times Bill Cunningham (On the Street) wrote about how 3/4s jackets are back in a big way - very much like the 40’s and 50’s when women would wear long gloves underneath them. Prada showed this same look for Fall 07 - so you are right on trend!
Anna - I’m going to a tradeshow of sorts called EAST - here in Austin next wknd - if you’re interested in seeing more I know Sweet Tooth will be there.
Hi Jenny!! Yup, I’m in!!! Sounds amazing! BTW… just read the Jessica Simpson boot section-you are HILARIOUS!!! I still can’t stop laughing…
